Default Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)

Good Morning DPS family! Last evening, I went for a long walk up the hill to the Arboretum overlooking the river. I had planned to shoot a landscape I've been wanting to attempt. As I was walking by a garden area, I saw these fellows flying everywhere. Wouldn't you know I didn't bring a Macro lens with me, but luckily my Canon 28-105mm worked pretty well in the failing light.

Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum)
The Hummingbird Hawk-moth (Macroglossum stellatarum) is a species of Sphingidae, hawk moth with a long proboscis, which regularly hovers, making an audible humming noise. These two features make it look remarkably like a hummingbird when it feeds on flowers; it is theorised that this is a result of convergent evolution. It flies during the day, especially in bright sunshine, but also at dusk, dawn, and even in the rain, which is unusual for even diurnal hawkmoths. Its visual abilities have been much studied, and it has been shown to have a relatively good ability to learn colours. (From Wiki)

Lincoln Logs
I don't know if you remember the toys called Lincoln Logs, they were invented by John Lloyd Wright, son of Frank Lloyd Wright, in 1916. They are still made today.
They are notched logs that can be assembled into a log cabin or other buildings. This landscaping Idea caught my eye and reminded me of them.

Thanks for looking and have a Blessed Day!

Wow Michael not only do you show us your wonderful talent as a photogapher, now you give us your wonderful narrations. Your captures are as usual outstanding. The moth captures are just gorgeous and I love the colours in the last one. Thanks for sharing your talent Michael.

Dave.

Thanks Dave! I was really excited when I saw these little guys flying around. I'm going back this weekend with a Macro lens and a tripod!

Thanks CJWilkes! You know they are harmless, they are nectar feeders and don't sting or bite. They seemed oblivious to me when I was photographing them.

Wow, I'd be so excited to see one of these, much less photograph it, that I'd nearly pee my pants! Not only that, but yours is the best photograph of a hummingbird moth that I've ever seen.

Michael, those are awesome shots of the hummingbird moth...I've heard of them, but I've never seen one...amazing.
