Colored Clouds

I was looking at these clouds through my sunglasses and noticed that the colors were not visible without them. I thought, hey maybe it's because of the polarzing effect that the glasses have. Reasonable enough thought, huh? So, the other day I find this filter in my camera bag (I don't remember buying it ) So, I put it on my zoom lens and shot this image. The filter is dark in color and has B+W 55E 102 4x printed on the inside of the ring. Any clues if I'm right about it being a polarizing filter?

This handbooks seems to have a similar filter to the one you describe on page 10/11.

Its amazing what one can see with a slight bit of manipulation. Love the colours!
