Default More Mushroom Pictures + question

The one day it was sunny, after a bunch of rain, a bunch of mushrooms started popping up in the yard and this one was the biggest one so I ran in and grabbed my camera.

Same mushroom, different perspective

I love how these turned out.

I have a question for all you guys. You see, I've been shooting with my little Point and Shoot Nikon Coolpix S210 but since I want to be a photographer/photojournalist and go to college for that, I want to buy a DSLR camera. My art teacher at school suggested the Nikon D40. I might save up for that, but I'm not sure. What do you guys suggest? When I get the money to buy one, this'll be my very first DSLR camera. So yes, what do you guys suggest for a first camera?

I love these shots. You're just in High School? Wow! Hard to believe as all your stuff is so good. Sorry if that sounds like a put down it's not meant to be. Anyhow, I have the D40 and I love it. It's my first DSLR as well, so I can def recommend it. I know you gonna get a lot of different opinions on this.

The D40 is my first DSLR. haha And I'm 16.
I've had it for nearly a year now and it has taught me SO MUCH. If I had jumped right into something more professional, I would have been stumped. XD
But as it is, I'm now completely confident in upgrading to something in the $2000 range. So I saw GO FOR IT AND DONT LOOK BACK. XD

The D40's a good starter. However, if you're going to start photography full bore and hardcore, you'll probably outgrow it quickly. If you had the money, I'd start off with the D700. It has the FX sensor (full frame) vs the D40's DX sensor (smaller). I've got the D3 and love it. However, you'll see a lot of pros out there with the D700 as their primary tool.

My two cents...

haha, I'm 16 too! Anyway, I'm glad to hear that the D40 helped you learn! That's making me lean towards the D40 (even though only three people's said so =) ). I still have a long way to go before I save up the money I need for it, but I'm slowly getting there.

sheltiesmama: I'm so glad you liked the pictures! I saw you also added me a contact on flickr as well, so thank you for that, too! I take that as a compliment about the high school comment

I don't really have the money for a camera more than a thousand dollars at the moment, due to the fact that I'm currently deprived of a drivers license until this Friday and no one wants to hire 16 year olds anymore I'm hoping to find someone that will hire me so I can have some kind of income and put back for a camera and accessories, and insurance and gas of course.

Tough times

I do appreciate your feed back though! The D700 does look like an excellent camera

I would have to agree with equilution to at least a degree. I have a D40 aswell and you really do grow out of it quickly (esspecially if you're really into photography), but there's also the lens compatibility. Now this probably won't matter to you as it is your first DSLR, but possibly further down the road you may pick up older lenses for whatever reason, and find out you can't auto-focus or expose at all with them.

So if you can, go with a D90 or higher as this will ensure full compatibility with almost all lenses available today. These are just my 2 cents.

I LOVE MY D40!!
I just started photography not too long ago and started with a D40....I still have it now. I am extremely happy with how all my pics come out, no too complicated to use. My mom has the D90....it is really heavy and more complicated than I want to get into. We can on the other hand switch out all our lenses because they are both Nikons.
Good luck with your choices.
This is a great great photo....very colorful and clear....
