GIMP is what your looking for. GIMP is free and almost as good as photoshop. Give it a try, I think you'll like it. I do. Also Picasa is another nice program.

I think this photo should probably have been posted in the Critique section of the site, so if you can't find it, that's probably where a mod moved it to.
It's a HUGE product and quite hard to represent adequately with a single photo. Your idea with the background is fine, but maybe get a bigger sheet. What I would do is take one picture of the whole thing to give a general idea, but then also take several creative close-up shots of aspects of the product that are either interesting or visually arresting. You can then make a collage of all of these images onto a single page. As for not having Photoshop, neither do I I use either GIMP, which is free, or PaintShopPro, which is no longer free/shareware, but available relatively cheaply and is quite a decent inexpensive alternative to Photoshop.

Oh, and I think the thing that might also get in the way is the perspective, because the product is so big. I don't know if you have one or if it would help, but perhaps a different type of lens such as a Tilt lens might help to soften the effect of the perspective a bit.
