Default not sure what this guys doing with the ball?

i had itchy feet yesterday so needed to get out and about. Whilst driving through a nearby village i spotted a cricket match playing. i`m not really into cricket but couldn`t resist stopping for a couple of shots, but not sure what this guy is doing in shot 2 with the ball, any idea`s?

shining on side of it. As you polish up one side, the other is roughed up by the pitch and batsman.
With 2 sides of different quality, the ball can swing in the air, making life more difficult for the batsman. Here is a great explination: Nasa proves why cricket balls really swing - Times Online
