Default An old wooden tug boat.

Hey everyone I'd like to share this photo of an old wooden tug boat I took on a day trip with my fiancé. As most of you know some of the best photographs come out of pure surprise, and personally I see this shot as being one of them. The sun was very bright the morning I took this photo and this was one of the only shots that had been exposed so you could see detail in the boat's wooden planks.

I love to photograph old wooden anything! There is something to be said about things made out of wood and steel by hands not robots. They have character that can not be achieved by the present day cookie cutter, plastic revolution. Objects, like this boat, seem to have a personality and story behind them.

I'll quit yapping...here is one of my favorite photos I've taken in the short time I've been in the hobby. I would love your comments and they're all appreciated. Also check out my flickr (link in my sig) if you want to see some of my other work.

Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.005 sec (1/200)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 31 mm

Thanks for looking.

Thanks for the nice comments.

Diz, I should try to pull something out of the wood a bit more you're absolutely right. I did an auto contrast on the picture and desaturated it. That's all. Feel free to browse my flickr Diz.

Here is another shot of the boat the entire left side and none of the right side.

Here is another boat I took a picture. This one is in the water however but still has character. I have a black and white version of this but it's not on this computer or on my flickr yet.

Very nice capture of an interesting subject. I'm with you on wooden boat and wooden things as well, I used to have 36' Chris Craft, all Mahogany. it was beautiful, but I reached a point where I couldn't afford to keep up the hull. It leaked so bad that It almost sank before I sold it. I imagine that the owner of the one you posted had a similar experience.
Thanks for sharing this
Michael.

Chewy,

Chris Craft boats are very nice, but you're right wooden boats cost even more to upkeep than fiberglass and it's really a money pit. Something you have to love to be able to keep it a long time.

At some point tonight I'll throw up another shot of that large steel boat in black and white. I think the weather here in Seattle has me in a black and white mood.

What a great find and you've captured and present the old craft beautifully.
I love the angle that you used to take the picture and can imagine sevaral alternative versions of this same picture by cropping much of the lower section. Excellent work Cliff

That is a wonderful B&W shot of that boat, the angle and the lighting are spot on.

Default Great photo

I agree with your story about character, my dad used to own an old wooden boat and they always have stories behind them. Great photo and a great choice to go with black and white.

Awesome thanks for more comments.

Here is another shot of that fishing boat with the black and white done on it. This is cropped down from the original.
