Talking Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes

Returned yesterday from my trip to the Sleeping Bear Dunes in Michigan. It was an awesome trip, but I really over packed and had to lug around a lot of things I didn't end up using while taking pictures. I always tend to do this I just need to not pack half the stuff I bring on a trip next time.

This is the observation deck above a very steep dune right next to Lake Michigan. The deck sits 450 feet above sea level. The actually dune is higher then this by about 50 feet.

This is Angie watching the Sunset over Lake Michigan, she decided to walk the dunes with me. I let her use my XTi since she didn't have a camera. She took a lot of pictures but part of the trade off for letting her use some of my gear was carrying some of it.

Watching Lake Michigan Sunset

This shot is from the same dune the observation deck is on but near the top of the dune. As you can see the people at the bottom look like specks. I put my gear back in the car and decided to go down the dune. The climb up was really hard and took about an hour. You take 1 step up and slide 1/2 a step back every time.

Steep

Another shot of the really big dune, this is even closer to the top. Here you can see a group of people deciding if they really want to go down this massive dune. The people sitting are probably people who went down and and climbing up taking breaks every few feet.

How much could you make running a "dune lift" operation to pull people back up the dune?

The photo of the deck is surreal: looks like a fairly typical beach scene, until you realize that the water is very, very far down.

And the third photo does a great job conveying the scale of those dunes.

What a cool place. I'd love to go watch the sunset there one day. Must've been fun!

What a fantastic location. Your pictures are excellent and I certainly get a feeling for how massive these dunes are and I can see how beautiful it is as the the sun sets and the sand meets the lake. Great post

That particular one was a HDR image that was tone mapped then adjusted in photoshop after.

Wow, I really loved the whole set, then you added some here, the last one is incredibly beautiful, I love
the sun setting on the driftwood, that one definately needs to be printed. The dunes are massive and you did a fabulous job of showing that. Very nice set.
