Default Oglebay Mansion

The History of Oglebay

For twenty-five years Earl W. Oglebay spared no expense or effort in turning his property, located just outside Wheeling, West Virginia, into a beautiful country estate, as well as a model farm where research in soil culture and crop rotation was carried out. During these years the mansion house was rebuilt, buildings were added, and much landscaping and roadwork was accomplished.

Upon his death in 1926, Mr. Oglebay willed his property to the people of Wheeling and vicinity, for as long as they "shall operate it for public recreation." In July 1928, plans were finally worked out for transfer of the property and it was accepted as Oglebay Park on behalf of the people and placed under the governing hand of the Wheeling Park Commission.

This is a photo of the mansion as it sits today. The fountain i posted yesterday sits to the left of the mansion at the end of the road. This is a beautiful park with ton's of photographic opportunites ranging from wildlife to landscapes to flowers............

Earl W. Oglebay, sounds like a really good bloke, and he certainly had a great looking house and grounds. Prime, you do him and his memory proud with your excellent picture, and it looks like a wonderful location for further day or night time shots, nice job mate

It is great to hear that people with money give back to the community, and that this property etc was adopted as a park and rec area. I really like the composition of this shot with the road leading your eye into the photo. Nicely done, and thanks for sharing the story as well.

That first shot is just gorgeous. It shows all of the beauty of this place. I would love to see the inside.

Love the angle of the shot, this looks to be a great area with lots of photo opportunities. I've been in Wheeling before, but didn't know about this place before now. I don't remember why I was there, but it must of been work related. Great shots and the fountain is beautiful with the water along the sides.
