I captured this Osprey image last week in southern California at the San Joaquin Wildlife Sanctuary in Irvine. It was a particularly hot afternoon (104 F. / 40 C.) and I was lucky enough to be the only photographer on hand for this display of "birdly" cooling.

The afternoon light was quite nice and it was around 6:15 pm (18:15) in the evening, thus the sun was lower in the sky, giving direct light as opposed to overhead which would create shadowing in a like situation.
In this image I get the 'stare down'...
