A reverse macro ring is simply just your ordinary lens turned around and remounted in the reverse direction. It allows you to see things much closer than you normally would.

Sometimes it's called "poor mans macro"
Since there are no electric contacts (because of the reverse mount) you can't adjust aperture. You can only adjust shutter speed and focal length.
I really don't have any idea what the focal length is because the camera didn't know.

I had the end of the lens about 1.5" away from the CD. It's really not that close. I popped the CD in the microwave for about 1 second, watched the lightening storm in my microwave and that is what produced the cracked look to the CD.
