Default First Attempt At FIREWORKS

Last night was the first night of fireworks at the Gold Coast Show. They have them tonight and tomorrow night, also, however the weather today is not so great. If it is a clear night tomorrow night I'll probably go back and find a better position from which to take the pictures.

I read the DPS article on tips for shooting fireworks ages ago, but have only just had the opportunity to try them out. The 3 tips I used were tripod, long exposure & since I don't have a remote shutter release, I set the self timer. This is my first attempt at shooting fireworks. They've been edited using photoshop, and a few of them ended up looking ok (in my humble opinion!).

4 second exposure, which I don't think was long enough:

fireworks5

10 second exposures, which I think were much better!

Nice Pics, I saw that article too and was hanging out for our local show. Unfortunatly i didnt have a tripod, and the camera was still new so i didnt know how to change the shutter speed, but i did have it on the setting that had the longer one and did manage to get some longer shots. And i made the mistake of having my longer lens on where i should have had the shorter one.. But i didnt get a couple of nice shots that wernt too wiggly LOL

Saddly i have to wait until the Christmas pagent fireworks to try again but i know how to change shutter speed now and I will hopefully have a tripod by then too. I will share them another time, i used my pics to share for the day LOL

That was part of the article I read...framing your shots. I guess some fireworks shots look ok with just the fireworks, but def looks better w/ the building and some perspective I think.

Going back again tonight now the weather has cleared up and might go tomorrow night and shoot from a different angle.

Nice shots! I agree with the others that including the firing platform was a nice touch. I read the same article not long after I purchased my dSLR and attempted to shoot fireworks myself. Unfortunately it was my two year old's first fireworks show so we had to sit far off and I didn't have enough lens to get adequate composition. Maybe next year I'll be able to get closer or have a longer lens.

I left my 15 month old at home with his dad just in case! He hasnt' seen fireworks yet! How did your 2 year old do with them? Maybe we'll take him tonight. I did use my telephoto lens so a lot of the other shots are way too closeup and no good, might use the other lens tonight.

My daughter did fine with the fireworks, but she wanted to run into the crowd and explore her surroundings. We were far enough off so that the big explosions weren't too overwhelming for her.

I agree with you that the ten second exposure shots look better. You did a great job with these. Thank you for sharing.

Well, went back to take more tonight, but learned one HUGE lesson...high winds + fireworks = BAD. There are a FEW I salvaged I guess, but don't think they're as good as these last 3 I posted here. Will add them tomorrow.
