Default B & w

After yesterday's crappy b&w , i tried again . Black and white is sooooo hard to do with gimp's 8bit color file.

This is a recap of yesterdays crap

And this is what i came up with so far (after trying ALL kinds of different stuff). A little better i think. Didn't realize how hard b&w is .

Looks better to me. Gimp is hard to figure out...I have it on my home computer...but I have yet to use it! IDK much about it and it's not self-explanatory!!! I guess eventually I'll take the time to look up the 'how-to' menu!

quite an improvement .... I don't have Gimp .. lately I find myself using Picasa and FastStone image viewers for fast photo touchups and conversions ... great work here on this photo

First off, ignore HenBres. He obviously is in need of negative attention. I find that i like the first version better as the second on seems to lose detail around the tree foliage because the sky is a bit blown out, but that is only my humble opinion, and I am definitely working on my B&W conversions as well. I have not used Gimp because I ended up purchasing Lightroom 2, but if i was to fix this image I would have used a gradient filter or mask for the sky area and toned it down in your second version so the details I mentioned would not have been lost. To each his own. : )

I use GIMP for all my BW conversions as well. Try working with different types of pictures, pictures of landscapes are relatively hard to convert well because the digital process - everything is green.

I'm not sure the process you used for the conversion, but I find that the channel mixer in this plugin is particularly helpful. I like it more than the built-in channel mixer because you can actually see what changing the sliders does before you run the whole filter.

There are a couple other tricks to BW conversions that I've found with GIMP, if you're interested just send me a PM and I'd be happy to share them.

I don't recall seeing the "crap" (your word), but I like this one. Great composition too.
