Default Inside the Cathedral

Just back from taking the kids to St Albans for the afternoon - took these shots at the Cathedral. I am just starting out on the learning curve that is photography - I hope some of you like some of the shots and thank you for looking.

Hey, welcome to DPS Forums. I do have some critique on your pictures. Although they do look nice, some composition would definitely help.

For the first picture, I think your shot would look much better if you show more skies, and less of that green... Sorry i'm just not really feeling it... the green is covering up a lot... Perhaps a higher elevation would have a better shot, if possible.

Second one, not sure of what to say... It's a fine picture, I suppose.

On the third picture, I have to be a bit critical. I dont like how you're only capturing the ceiling, the fact that it shows the end of the arches makes the image look quite unappealing. You can do one of two things. Either crop out the bottom part of the picture thats revealing the end of the area... Not sure what to call it... OR, you can use a very wide angle lens that has a short focal length and capture everything. It would look a lot nicer.

and for the last picture... I don't have much to say... Not sure how it would look if you composed the image with the rule of thirds... Hm... I bet someone else will have something better to say than I do.

But I'm just here to help. What camera are you using, Beanymonster?

Default lovely!

I think your pictures are a wonderful tribute to what looks like a very special trip. From the Cathedral in the distance to the very intimate closeup of the statue, it feels like I took the trip with you. I love #2, I feel like I'm standing right there on the tiles. I quite like the arches as well, loving the details in architecture, and the hands reflect the purpose of the visit. Truly delightful storytelling, Jim Bryant has some great articles here in DPS about capturing the "story" of your subject. Well done! And thank you for sharing!!

Well if you are just starting out and these are examples of what you are capable of doing then I would say you have a great photographic future ahead of you.

I really enjoyed these shots especially the third and fourth shots.

Welcome to DPS.

Welcome to DPS
I like these, I agree that the first one has to much greenery but the sky didn't have much happening in it so I think you did the best you could. I really like the third one. Keep it up, I look forward to seeing more from you.

The second one is great, and the first one is quite nice too - just a shame that there was no nice blue sky behind it

Thanks very much for all your comments - I appreciate them all.

Retronesphoto - my camera is an old Panasonic DMC-FZ7. I am saving hard for a DSLR and some editing software - hopefully by the end of the year

Regarding #1, I do agree there is too much green - the reason being I couldn't zoom in any more! The idea was to capture how this magnificent building dominates the surrounding countryside, perched high amongst the trees - maybe it would have been better if the sun was out (and I could get closer).

One thing I am starting to appreciate - it is amazing how many different ways there are to look at the same photograph.

Thanks again
