rawHulk it really is fairly easy.I'm not a huge fan of HDR or overly post processed images.I'm an old hold out that believes that what was done with film can be done with digital and this image is a very good case of that.

1) I believe in filters, in the right situation. I chose the Cokin Gradual red 1, because I have it and this was the time to use it.Also it helps to have a working knowledge of a darkroom. In my case it was always film.

2) I framed the shot with the 3 rocks in the foreground. Now the question is.... how do I Illuminate them without blowing them out ? Bracket the flash.Straight on flash would have blown out the rocks.-1EV was better but knowing my cameras' limits with on board flash I chose the lower aspect and went with -3.0 EV and underexposing them.

3)Knowing how to use local contrast, again , the darkroom. In this case I chose in post to lighten (dodge) the rocks to open them up.What you don't see it is all of the unessasary elements , all of the pebbles in the foreground that had a strange color cast from the filter.I just made them darker(burned in) to get rid of them. But it's not over yet. What you see in Lightroom or for that matter Photoshop (Elements) isn't what you will see.I then had to lighten up everything by 10% just to get the colors I wanted.

There ya go ...thats how I did it.
