Default It's almost ready for harvest in Kentucky

Corn is a newer crop for us and soybeans as well. The hay is a common staple around here for both horses and cattle

DSC_0729

Tobacco, our cash crop which is no longer the hefty money maker it once was.....still back breaking work to harvest it......Can be really good $ to chop and stake it. Much of the work going to immigrants and illegals......used to be a rite of passage for our farming teens.....still is I guess for some

DSC_0731

This barn is full of hay....getting ready for winter

DSC_0738

8 ft corn along the roadside...it looks much better this year than last.....last year was a continuation of drought conditions around here.....much corn goes to livestock....not sure how much around here goes to market for human consumption.....most of that comes from our Midwest.....Nebraska, Iowa etc.

Thanks for sharing, Patrick. Great representations of the 'countryside'. We have our share of corn in Illinois. My wife and I visited 'CornFest 2009' in DeKalb County last weekend. They have it every year...3 days of free live music, carnival, variety of food and vendor booths, games, other entertainment and.....heaps of corn. I think this year's estimate was 50 tons of sweet corn was served. For a portion of Saturday, it's free...cooked, served with butter and salt. We brought a couple of bags home of uncooked ears...14-18 ears per bag at $3.00 a bag! They are serious about their corn! Sorry, enough blabbing, again very nice images and thanks for sharing.

Hey thanks for sharing your great shots with two Kiwi Country kids.....well, those kids have kinda grown up now, but still love the wide open spaces of farm life.

Patrick, thanks for the nice tour. I can remember seeing the black tobacco barns in Kentucky as I traveled through in times past. I used to own a hardware store and purchased a lot of stuff from Belknap in Louisville back in the day. Nothing like Belknap's line of Blue Grass tools!

I love your captures of the harvest time Patrick and all so green. Your photographs really show the countryside so well. Thanks for sharing them buddy.

Dave.

Thanks Dizwold...I have been to the UK and know what you mean about the perpetual gray. I used to live in Seattle which is a carbon copy of the UK.....yet I love city life and am not wildly enthused with the countryside.....it's nice to look at but I would not want to live on a farm.

From several pictures that I have seen of NZ, it seems to carry many of the same looks of our bluegrass region in places.

Those black barns are everywhere! They are designed to hold heat so as to quickly dry out the tobacco leaves.

Dave.
It is hot here and the grass is both green and brown depending on when it was cut and how short it was cut. The leaves have already begun to show signs of changing color......how depressing.....means winter is around the corner!
