Default Sunday on the Move

Set alarm clock for an hour before sunrise.. got up, went outside.. heavy cloud cover, no sunrise shoot this morning.. oh well, back to bed !!

so I got up about an hour later, took a shower and hit the road, Today's shoot has a theme and it's " Movement " ,

First up the Suffolk County Model Aeroplane Club, it was a little windy, so the planes were kept pretty high and away from the ground and trees .. I got some great panning shots of the planes.. but shooting them in the sky, with nothing to reference the speed ( like blurred trees in the background ) makes them seem like they are almost standing still

IMG_6666
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1000)
Aperture: f/10.0
Focal Length: 200 mm
ISO Speed: 200
Exposure Bias: 0 EV
Nice detail of a flying model airplane.. but seems to be missing a sense of movement to me, least the propeller seems to be moving.

this one has some trees and thus adds something to anchor the view .. but was flying kinda slow into the wind ..shooting the Barn Swallows a few times has made these little RC planes seem alot slower then they used to.
IMG_6733
Camera: Canon EOS Digital Rebel XSi
Exposure: 0.001 sec (1/1600)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 200 mm
ISO Speed: 200

both shots taken with the 70-200m and hand held.. I don't have the IS version and was quite pleased with my progress, I was confident in my settings and comfortable leading them in the panning .. and was alot of fun hanging with the flyboys and thier "Toys"

Oh my way out of the same park with the Model Airplanes I drove past a some men out on the fields playing a strange game {smile} ... they were wearing funny white uniforms and hitting a ball with a bat .. I didn't have the heart to tell them they were playing Baseball all wrong !! But I've also been looking to shoot " people " and to stop avoiding opportunties so these guys are included however I do admit there's alot of room for improvement and will surely get another look in the future.

I am very interested in these guys playing Kricket .. white clothes in the sun,, moving balls and bats .. I think I'm going to have to shoot them again .. but first I'll have to read up on Jim Bryant's Tutorial on shooting action sports !! ( I want the ball comming off the Bat )

OK, and now the grand finale ! .. on the way home I stopped at the ' Power Boat Races " happening right near my own town in our bay .. this is a National tour event .. these boats race all over the states , I got there very late and was only able to get a few shots of the boats racing .. notice the helecopter above the boat , that's for safety.. they go SO fast if they crash, the driver and navigator can drown ( if the Impact doesn't kill them ) there is a diver in the copter ready to jump in , last year 2 people died in this event , this year all went well with no crashes.

IMG_6800a

my best guess is well over 100mph , amazing how fast they zoom by and a few times I caught myself watching and not shooting, missed quite a few of the boats, but was really glad I decided to stop for it.

So that's "Movement on a Sunday" ... Hope you like the set .. I really had a great day and am happy to share a little of it !! thanks for taking a look !

Vin

Great Set Vin! Yea I like your second Model plane shot better as it doe show your paning abilities. The 1st one while well focused could be hanging from the ceiling in that blue sky.
What are those guys doing playing Cricket in America; I guess if your not good enough to play baseball, at least theres an option. l.o.l

I really like the last capture, it very well captured and I love watching the big speed boats.
Thanks for sharing these
Michael

Vin, thanks for sharing your "moving" experiences with us. I like the variety you've brought to the table here. Looks like a very fun day and as, always, the photography is superb.

Nice panning shots vin............those barn swallows were prob. like an f-16 compaired to those models . You caught a good action shot with the cricket game, and my favorite is the last one. Those boats are awesome! Great job!

Great set Vin. That last one is A++++. As to the cricket shots I do lots of these and if you are wanting to catch the ball on bat then you need to concentrate on the batter and his movements. Here are some examples of shots I took at this years test match in Wellington New Zealand v India.

Daniel Flynn - NZ Batsman

Sachin Tendulkar - Indian Batsmen ( The Master)

Sachin Tendulkar - Indian Batsmen ( The Master)

Ross Taylor - NZ Batsman
