Default Brothers - Yesterday's Shoot

I did a shoot yesterday for a return client. I've been playing around with Lightroom Presets I've found at Presetting Lightroom on Flickr. My hope is to teach myself how to achieve these looks without presets. Click Here for the set.

Last one is my favorite. The first two (especially the second) are a bit blurry - 1/15 exposure is pretty long to get an active kid in focus.

I agree - I'm still learning and practicing getting everything right. For most of these shots I was in portrait or auto and not using flash. I'm *slowly* trying to get to the point where I use my camera more and PP less.

Ohh for me that would be a shame , one of the fun parts of photography is also the PP .

I liked the second shot because the face seems sharp but the body displays some movement. Movement in a photo isnt always bad

The thing about photo's in my opinion, while PP can make an ok photo better it can make a great photo amazing . There's just so much you can do, so many options that not doing PP to a great photo is a shame. Sure if u like a photo as a pure photo you will still have it there but i think its always worth playing around with them just to see the photo from a different view/perspective.

Of course! I love PP as well, in fact, if you read my flickr profile it says "For some ungodly reason, I love to heavily modify pictures, so don't be surprised." I've loved to PP the heck out of pictures since I was a kid (think about an emo kid's myspace pictures or something)

But at the same time, I want to learn to get my lighting right. Not to have to sharpen the eyes in my pictures, I want to get my focus right, blah blah blah. I want to learn more of the technical things about my camera without depending on the computer to fix all my screw ups.

ahh, i get ya :P.... and i should really check your flickr out .

Well really.. i had a blast the other day using my d3 with a sigma flash (pentax one..) in manual, manual focus, manual exposure at a party .

I mostly use AV mode on that and my gx10, or TaV on my gx10 for shooting gigs.. but i do venture into manual mode alot to and because u can get instant screen of what you shoot its so easy to fire off a few shots to tweak your settings. You soon get used to ajusting on the fly.

as for the focus on eyes and stuff, well theres 2 ways i go about that,

1 i use manual focus but then the d3 has such a large viewfinder its easy, on my gx10 i fitted a split prism to help.
2 ajust the focal points. On both my cameras im always using the d-pad to move my focus points around to where i need them.. and if i cant get quite get them to were i want i focus and readjust my composition later

Thats not to say everything i shoots in focus lol, but just letting ya know what i do.. i guess its just down to having a feeling for your camera and your len or lens (since all lens are diff). One way to get used to your len's in manual focus is to set up some targets at diff length's apart and just practice shooting one.. then the other.. moving about a bit
