Default Southern Milky Way - With Satellites!

These are a few photos of the Milky Way that I got last night. (Canon 50D, 35 mm f2) If you carefully look at the lower right of the first two photos you can see two straight lines. These are the trails of satellites. The movement from the first to the second photo shows their movement. Each photo was about 15 seconds with only a few seconds between them. The third photo is the same region without the conversion to black and white. Postprocessing was mainly boosting the contrast very high. This darkened the sky. (After looking at the posted photos I realized that you will probably have to view them in full size to see the satellites - Sorry.)

What was your EXIF? The pics are great, wonderfully exposed.

Hey these are great shots. I love the way you used the silouetted trees as borders.

Thanks. All were f2.5. The first was 13 sec, 1600 ISO. The second was 15 sec, 2500 ISO. The third was 13 sec, 2000 ISO. The first two were AWB and the third was set at 3700K. I was experimenting a little.

Very nice work! I'm jealous, though. I drove out to a reasonably distanced (1 hr) dark sky site for the night of the Perseid Meteor Shower hoping to do some shots like yours, but we were completely clouded out, and I haven't had a chance to go out since. Waiting for the next New Moon, too, to have a really dark sky.

Nicely done. The last one works especially well with the trees framing the Milky Way. And your focus appears to be good, too.

I used to use AWB for shots like this but then someone suggested using the daylight white balance setting and it seems to have made a positive difference. Maybe you should give it a try next time, too?

Thanks for sharing.
