Nice portrait ! The way you have the bottom of the shot lit it almost looks surreal. Which gives it a Suesslike feel. (if that is an understandable word)

I believe we just saw one of those trees in California this week. If it is the same, they are beautiful..I'd never seen one before. What is the name of it?

thank you! i jave no idea what Suess is.. or how to pronounce it.
do you mean like Dr. Sues?

the flash filling in the shadows, as cast by the sun gives it an in-camera HDR type effect.
see the fence on the left..

This photograph is beautiful with all of the color so rich even right next to the sunbeams! Is any of that color from tweaking or is that completely flash fill? What about the blue sky? Is that HDR? I'm sucking up all the book knowledge... just waiting for my first DSLR so I can actually apply it. !

Jessie.
hey Jessie,
there is obviously a little bit of photoshop involved (not much tho..a crop and a little saturation.. and a tad bit of lightening on the face to make the mug pop out a little more.. otherwise its in-camera, but the HDR lok came naturally , exposing for the highlights and filling in the shadows with two flashes.
like this, but with the flashes on stands obviously
check out Strobist for info on how

thanks for your kind comment

That looks like a Magnolia tree - not sure of what type. However back to the foto - very well composed and I like what you have done with the lighting. Full marks from me. Cheers, Bernz

The tree is a Magnoilia Soulangiana. Some people call it a Tulip Tree because the flowers resemble a tulip. I have one growing in my yard.

.
Dr Suess is a popular childrens author .... wrote Horton Hears A Who, The Cat in The Hat, Green Eggs and Ham etc..... There is a whole portion of Universal that is devoted to his worlds. The look of the fence reminded me of that.

So how about I say Nice HDR effect ??
