Default Falling Stars

I went out for a while to see the Perseids and try and capture some with my camera. I had to drive about 25 miles near Jean, NV to get far enough away from the Vegas light pollution to have any chance of seeing them. I took about 40 shots and I caught one. I was shooting at 28mm but there were so many that I missed because they were just out of frame. I need a some wider glass.

Nice try at that....although it's faint, I can see it, and that's more than I got

It was rough out there. Basically it's like taking a slice of the sky and hoping one will fly through the frame that is bright enough to show up. I had Polaris and the whole rest of the Little Dipper in my frame for a little while. The brightest Perseid that I saw all night showed up just out of the frame. Into where I had the shot set up moments before.

My hubby and I watched the Perseid shower from a hill in Bisbee several years ago. I wish now that I had a shot like yours if for no other reason than to remember the magic of seeing so many falling stars. For you, of course, your photo will probably remind you of the shot you didn't get...but almost did. Dang! I feel your pang!

Wow. And I missed the whole thing. You can't even see stars from where we live (unless someone knocks you in the head LOL)

I had to drive 25 miles away to be able to even have a chance at seeing them and we already live about 10 miles away from the Strip. The light pollution was still ridiculous even that far away.

that's a great shot, even if it wasn't the brightest... i tried to bike far enough away to see them because i don't have a car, but even though i'm in a relatively small city, there was still too much light pollution... oh well maybe some other time, and hopefully by that time i'll own a dslr so i can get some photos too

Lindy, for a while I might think about the ones that I missed but that will pass. It sucks but hey there are going to be more and all I can do it try again. Maybe the next time that I get out to see some I'll have a wider lens.

Bearly & Eaglesfan there are more decent meteor showers throughout the year. The next one coming up would be the Draconids in October but I believe the moon might be too bright for them, and the Orionids also in October. If you want to know more go to this website 2009 Meteor Showers. According to the site there are 11 showers a year.
