Potential Meal?

Yellow Crowned Night Heron (Immature)

This was the 1st time I've ever seen an immature (juvenile) yellow crowned night heron. I've seen adults in this same spot over the past year, so I assume there's a nest close by.

I thought long and hard about using a flash to get a more even exposure. But, this little thing let me get so close (about 15 feet), I didn't want to do anything to break that trust and spook him.

For reference, this is what he/she will look like when it's all grown up:

Quite a change!

Thanks for looking.

These must be some of your best work Chip, they are excellent.
The colour, composition, detail, focus, DoF, light and shade are all just about perfect and the commentary pulls it all together. I'm pleased for you, great job mate

Well done, Chip! Excellent focus and I'm glad you had such a willing model to shoot. The third shot is really cool!

Very nice posture (#3)! I think was a good idea to shoot without a flash. Nice work!

PrimeTime - Thanks very much. While I do very much like the lens I was using, I sure wish I was using then that was longer than 85mm! I was just lucky to get close enough to this one.

Mike - Many thanks. For that third one, it was just about ready to "pounce" on something, but then thought better of it.

Thanks very much, and thanks for the confirmation on the lack of flash.

Fred - Thanks! It's funny, but for some reason I never think of birds needing to scratch. But, it's only natural . . . .
