Wink First Newborn Shoot

I'm still getting used to my Canon 50D and am very new at photographing children that are not my own. I just did two practice shoots with various coworker's children.

The first was from my first newborn shoot where I just set up a black backdrop in the middle of their kitchen (that's where the best natural light was!) Child is 6 weeks old and I just love how she manages to look thoughtful in this shot. Only editing on this one was using the healing brush for a scratch on the baby's cheek.

The second is from an outdoor shoot with a 10-month-old which, unfortunatley, could only fit in his schedule at noon. For his I played around with making the pictures a vintage look.

Thanks for any pointers you might have for a newbie!!

I like your first one but the focus seems a little off. Not sure if you were on auto or manuel but sometimes when you offset a subject and use auto, it will focus behind the subject.

Keep up the good work though!

Yes, I was on auto in anticipation of a wiggler. Any suggestions to keep it from focusing behind? I noticed it on a few other images as well.

Working with children is tough but when I offset a subject I go with manual focus. If you have someone helping you (likely you do since you are working with a baby) they can get the baby's attention long enough to focus and take a few shots. I'm no expert but my plan with children is have patience, have help and take lots of photos! I am the mother of four boys so I get lots of practice on the patience part! LOL!

I agree, I love the first shot, but his eyes don't seem to be clear....that would have made it perfect. The composition is one I like a lot.
Welcome to DPS.

Focus or not, they are still lovely shots. I especially like the second shot of the young man out playing.
