Default Wildfire--Long Exposure

Well, it’s that time of year, when those of us that live in the hotter, drier climes turn our thoughts and concerns towards the safety of our houses and lands. Wildfires. They suck. But they can sure look pretty…

Bishop Creek Canyon Aflame--f/11; 60seconds; ISO 100

I took this shot last night at about 10pm when this fire was only a couple 3 or 4 hours old. This morning, it has quintupled in size. I haven’t seen if it is still actively burning or not.

I believe this fire is the result of a lightening strike from a late afternoon thunderstorm yesterday, but I am not positive of that. I do know that there are a LOT of cabins, campgrounds, and homes that are in serious danger of being consumed by this beast. I hope things get under control fairly soon.

Please be careful out there hiking, camping, climbing…even driving your car on dirtroads. The brush is dry so use spark arrestors and caution with fires and smoking. Please…

Fire is an awesome dangerous beast. But this is a beautiful image. I'm heading up that way next week for a little fishing. Hope it's under control quickly.

At this moment, I just heard helicopters flying overhead, presumably transporting Hot Shots, Smoke Jumpers, and equipment. HWY 395 was closed yesterday evening and through the night. Not sure if it's open right now or not.

As you know, California has some of the best wildfire fighters in the country, so hopefully it will be controlled and taken care of very soon. Gotta be honest though...I wouldn't expect the road up to Bishop Creek Canyon to open soon. They evacuated everything in the area up there last night...

Thanks for the comments, folks!

Ok, thanks for the information... We'll probably head straight through to Mammoth. At least if 395 is open.

Great image. Coming from a family with several firefighters, yes Calif has some of the best for sure, and unfortunately they stay very busy this time of year. I took a shot a while back of the aftermath of a forest fire, it is just so sad. Hope they get the fire contained quickly. Thanks for sharing.

Well...me and my family are forever grateful to you and your family for what those firefighters do...without them, we would be in danger every summer. But they somehow manage to keep us all safe by putting themselves directly in harm's way. So thank you, and thank them for me.

BC is on fire again, too. At least there's some beauty to be found in all the devastation.
