It didn't take you long to get the hang of something new Angella. These are lovely captures. I particularly like the first one. The shadows really bring out the nice textures..I love the colours and composition of the last one. Simple and so effectiver. They are all lovely Angella. Great job. And nice to have an inspiring mom too.

Dave.

Angella,
First of all congratulations for getting the courage to try new things. It is not at all easy to get out from the comfort zone and risk the warm feeling that you know what you are doing.

Usually, people in this forum are really nice and have constructive and positive comments.
It is like an un-written "silk glove" policy. Now, since you asked my (not mine personally, but still) honest opinion, I think I can break the mentioned untold rules and give it to you, so here we go.

The first one is a nice shot, not original or very special in any way but the textures are interesting and the ruins tell the story of a better past. That works for me.

The second is way too busy. Brick and folliage (good contrast between green and red) is a good combination but for some reason this one doesn't click. May be there are too many details and I cannot fix myself in a subject without being distracted by other elements. Besides, it is too dark close to the floor and overexposed in the top.

The third one I (almost) like. The old wooden fence is a great subject, light is OK and the background is perfectly fine. Regarding the composition, I feel that a looser crop, including the little part of the fence that was cut out in the bottom might be better.

I love the simplicity and the colors in the last one. Once again a different crop, perhaps leaving a narrow top and a narrow right side woud contrast the other shapes and give a nice effect to the picture.

This is just my opinion and in matters of taste...you know.

I hope it is of help to you but I really hope you will do the same for me.
See you around.

Hi Angella, it's great to see you having a go, trying new things, it's the only way to learn.
I agree with flavio mostly, except I like the second one, The little window in the wall captures my interest and makes me want to keep looking to see what is over there. The fourth I would try and crop it in the same dimensions as the inner shapes I think that would look fantastic.

Flavio,
Is this more like what you were talking about for the 4th photo? The others unfortunately I can't do anything with.

I appreciate all the help. I would always be honest in my opinion but am still very new at this and appreciate all the help and honesty.

Odd, isn't it, that that photo people like best is merely squares within squares? It is my favorite, too, and I think it has to do, at least for me, with the pace with which I interact with it. My eye moves gently from color to shape. The orange at the horizon leads my eye back to the foreground in a very pleasing way. Another good case for the beauty of abstract art.
