Default Destroyer of Cakes

I did a cake smash this weekend with my daughter who is turning 1 in a week. This was in my garage with all natural light. The backdrop is left over drapery lining clamped to a $9.99 laundry rack from Target. I put $18 plexiglass down for the reflective effect.

These were taken with my new, yummy 24-70 f2.8L:

How cute and so well done! I love the one with the cake trimmings dripping off her hand. You've captured the sheer joy of being a child without a care.

Thumbs up Fun idea! Excellent execution!

Georgia, these are so cute!!! Love the DIY methods you used. I really must invest in a piece of Plexiglas one day. Your lighting is great.

The third one has to be my fave. I love her little toe pointing up in the air while she digs into the cake! LOL! Too cute!

These are just all too cute...what a beautiful baby...i love the 2nd one, the look on her face is priceless...this is a wall hanger for sure. The DIY ideas are great and im sure we will all be trying that. I have learnt from the DPS members that you dont have to spend a fortune to get great professional shots and you have proved it with these photos....great work.

Thanks guys

Yeah I'm not too cheap to buy a good lens, but certainly a tightwad when it comes to studio equipment (backdrop stand, muslins, lights, etc.). I usually shoot outdoors, though I have issues paying attention to the direction of my light. Most of the images I took of her in the park the next day are a bust because she was facing the opposite direction of the sun :/ Durrr on my part. They're not bad, but they're not going into my site's gallery.

I have the same problem with the sun so i guess we learn from our mistakes and at least we can own up to our photographic faults... you dont have much to worry about with photos of this standard..

Not long. I think we spent 15 minutes on the shoot and maybe 10 cleaning up. My husband cleaned up the set, and I took the baby up for a bath. She crawled away from me and put little handprints of cake and icing all over the bathroom floor, but it was hilarious

Here's a picture from the outdoor shoot that I (IMHO) fudged:

Maybe I'm just a perfectionist, but she's pretty grey/dark in certain areas, obviously because she's not facing the light source. I just didn't think of it at the time, because my husband was worried she'd fall off the chair and was rushing me. I hate it when he rushes me, but I need someone there to try to make her smile.
