Default Catch me if you can

Whilst in Auckland last weekend I went to watch my grandson play rugby and took a few shots of the action. Unfortunately my grandson does not feature in any of these but it does show the action.

Taken with my Nikkor VR 70-200mm lens

These are really great action shots, well composed and the exposure is spot on. The expression on their faces tell how committed to the sport they are at that age.

every one a stunner .. my fav is the last one, either a clear run to the goal line or a wall coming in to destroy, you can't tell as the one team is singular in your capture .. what's next???

Im curious... only because I havent mastered a lot of action photography.
Did you maual focus?
What were your settings?
I assume your lens is a VR... did you actually set the lens to "action"?
My shots always come out blurry and the color is never vibrant.
What am I doing wrong?
