Default Fire Fighter

Fire Fighter

I was reminded this week that my husband, who is a fire fighter, has a dangerous job. Sometimes I forget that. Let me, however, adjust this picture just a little bit. Oddly, he rarely fights fires. Occasionally, a kid sets a trash can on fire behind a Circle K but that's about it. Many of their calls involve accidents on the freeway--that sort of thing. His is not a busy station either. Much of his job involves keeping busy between calls. This week was different and he was in harms way. I'm posting this thread as a reminder to be thankful for him and what he does. These photos were taken at his station earlier this year. Thanks to him and the crew for allowing me to take these photos.

I've always been fascinated by fire fighting apparatus and fir fighting in general. I actually worked as a paid call fire fighter for several years until I got married and moved away from the community I lived in. It's not just a dangerous job at times but, it's also extremely hard physical work. My hat's off to anyone that puts themselves in harm's way for a stranger's benefit. Kudos to your husband Lindy. Nice job on the photos too.

I love these pictures Lindy My Dad was a firefighter for 32 years, retired now. I always tried to not think of how dangerous his job was and he tried not to tell me the things that he saw. Only now that i'm older do i realize how hard that job is and how much of a hero my Dad and all firefighters are. I actually thought about becoming a firefighter when i was younger but alas, i decided against it because i have asthma Thank you to all the men (like your husband and my father) and women who come to our rescue! thanks for sharing these and for reminding me of something important Kimi

Lindy, thanks for reminding me of firefighters like your husband that spend long hours in readiness and training to be able to respond at a moment's notice. We all tend to take them for granted unitl we need them and then we're might glad they respond. Tell your husband thanks for me! Nice shots, btw...they both got me to thinking about the people behind the equipment.

I so admire firemen and all the other emergency services for the job they do, these are wonderful pictures and serve to remind us of their efforts on our behalf. I know you said your husband doesn`t deal with to many fires but I would think that R.T.A.`s could be even more horrific, I admire all such people.

As I read your comments, I can tell you fully get the boredom/dangerous split personality of the job. One thing that really helps is that modern fire stations are now being built so that each man has a private room. I expect that this has helped with the other aspect of being a fire fighter, that is sleep disturbance. He's very grateful. Thanks for sharing your story about fire fighting and the service you performed for your community.

That is a long time to be a fire fighter. My husband is at year 26. He intends to work 4 more years. One thing people often fail to recognize is how hard fire fighters have to work to stay fit enough to do the job. Like you, Kimi, I don't think about the dangers too much. This glimpse pulled the veil away just enough to get my attention. I will say that if I were ever in danger, he's the person I would want to come to my rescue as he is the kindness man I know. I'm glad you like these photos and that it stirred memories of how proud you feel of your father.

He often goes for hikes in the heat of the day with a 50 lb. backpack just so he can stay in shape. He also eats all his veggies. Sometimes...not often...I wish he wouldn't set the bar so high! I'll pass your message along to him. I'm glad you like these shots. It was so fun to take them. You might like this one too:

That is so kind, Hayward. I've told him about my friend from Indiana who loves Hibiscus so he will know who I mean when I give him your message.

Thanks, Kym, you're right on the money about "the bad stuff they see". Of course, I am mostly shielded from that, but occasionally I catch a glimpse. Thanks for understanding.

Thank you very much, Bill. So often, I'm just in a bubble, deliberately shielded from the stuff of which nightmares are made. As you can imagine, posting these photos don't feel like much, they are a small thing I can do to express my appreciation. I thank you so much for yours, as well.

What a great tribute to Firemen, and they truly deserve it. Out here were I live our firemen are all voluntary (although they do get paid some money) so this is their second job. I never realized until I made friends with someone whose husband did this job how much they actually did and how much it affected them. The firers are one thing but the road accidents are often far to much for them. Often living in a smaller community you know the people involved, it's very hard. Great photos by the way.

Great shots Lindy, I am sure that your husband feels a great pride of being part of the firefighter fraternity. I know after 9/11, many of us stood up and took notice of our firefighters and began to give them the respect that they deserve. Give him my thanks for putting his life on the line and may he be protected for the remainder of his duty so you both can enjoy many days in retirement.
