I like the way these come out, light is some areas and very dark in others. Adds some mystery and drama to the photos that would be missing without it. I've been trying the same type of shots recently, actually tried some at a wedding and showed a few here in SYS. Not well received here, but a lot of people have ordered prints so at least the wedding participants liked them and they are the important ones.

Thanks guys! I've been trying to do this for a while, but more with the zack arias style of "move your subject pretty far from the background and keep it close to the flash" but I don't really have enough room anywhere in my house I don't think... So I was excited when these actually worked out haha.

If you use a fast enough shutter speed and a small enough aperture, you can even make such photos in a regularly lit room. This one was taken without darkening the room - just avoid direct sunlight or direct artificial light:

All of these shots are nice. I like the second one particularly the way the light falls on your left eye surface.
I might try this out this weekend.

Sybren: Sorry, I actually shouldn't have said that in my original post, because the room I took these in was lit - I had overhead lights on so that I could focus the camera. I meant more that the exposure I was at (1/160, f/16, ISO 100) didn't register any of the ambient.
