Default NIght Heron Capture

Came accross this Black Crowned Night Heron last week at Brookgreen Gardens in Murrells Inlet, SC. He was under the canopy and I did not think I could get a decent shot - thankfully I had decided to tote along my whole camera bag in 98 degree heat with 85% humidity and thus had my flash! WHEW! You never know when nature will smile upon you!

Beautiful Capture, Lots of Detail and good Bokeh! I love the Night Herons. We have them here in Korea as well! Yours looks well fed!! They don't seem to be as skittish as the Great or Blue Herons and Egrets.
Thanks for Sharing this.

Wow!! I would say lugging the extra equipment was totally worth it. Beautiful shot. I really like the composition and DoF.

Beautiful shot, thanks for sharing. If you decide you want even more heat and humidity, come on over to PR and I'll show you around. I used to live in SC and there is no comparison to here.

Really nice balanced exposure John.. great details.. a really beautiful bird ! well done

I am always afraid I'm gonna need something when I'm out shooting, so I lug around my gearbag which is too dang heavy. I've tried to travel light with just one lense, it doesn;t work for me lol ..

great capture..thanks for showing it !

Fred......Thanks for the invite, but I am tired of hot & sticky so I am departing for New Zealand (in the dead of their winter!) on Saturday to present at a conference & then to do a photographic trip around the South Island for 12 days before I return to the heat of Dallas!

While in NZ I'm hoping to capture some Hobbit portraits!

Thanks a lot Hayward!

I'm in the process of packing & trying to get all of my camera gear packed so I can get almost all of it in my carry on bag... Air New Zealand is picky .....only one bag allowed and it cannot weigh more than 15 lbs...... how to get BOTH my EOS 50D & L series lenses AND my laptop under that weight limit? I need a gravity adjustment device I think! LOL

Really well done. Great that you had the flash and that you were able to use it to your advantage.

I'm impressed.

Thanks Chip.....This was a case of recalling a tip I picked up from Rick Sammons about using flash during daylight by setting flash compensation to -1.3 or -1.5 or so once you have set the exposure manually. It helps to fill in shadows gently without usually blowing out your highlights. This was my first time to dliberately use this and I 'm happy that the results were good!
