Default Time for something normal

Went photo hunting today and found so many things it is difficult to know where to start. But here are some of the pelicans; egrets, terns, and gulls may follow later.

Grooming time...

Grooming

A little closer

Resting

A whole lot closer, maybe too close couldn't get his full bill into the shot.

Close Up

And his buddy right after he swerved to miss hitting me. This guy was very close and I couldn't react fast enough to get all of him in the shot. If you look at larger sizes you can see some type of bugs on his back and the bugs are fairly clear.

Close Call

Hi FDCPR, I've spent time looking at your last two shots in the original size on Flickr. Every detail is in sharp focus from the catch lights in the eyes to every little pin feather...and you describe shooting fast. Really quite amazing. Even though they are a common sight at the beach, they will probably always seem unlikely, like an experiment gone fascinatingly wrong.

Great Captures Fred! I'm still looking for Pelicans here in Korea, they must be here somewhere. Great Detail and Man you must have just caught the last one right. Sharp focus and Detail
Thanks for Sharing these

Thanks Vin, I was suprised just how close I was able to get. I don't know if it was luck or me getting better, but I shot over 200 shots that day and only trashed 18. Big difference, in the past I would only keep 18.

Thanks PrimeTime, I don't have a lot of choices for wildlife here so I shoot what I can find. Been on the hunt for caimens, but no one can point me in the right direction.

Thanks lindy, I had a very good shoot with the pelicans, got way more pictures than I will ever use. These guys are a subspecies of the Brown Pelicans, they are the Caribbean Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis). They are still listed as an endangered species, but are up for review and may become unlisted at some point. This was one of those spur of the moment shoots, I finished at a customer site early that day and since I am not commonly in that area just went looking around to see what I could find. Glad I went.

Thanks Michael, I don't know if you have Pelicans there or not but if you keep looking you will find lots of other critters. The last shot was a quick decision, run or shoot, I just leaned sideways and took the shot. Kinda reminded me of my martial arts days and ducking a kick.

All of these are great....Don't know if I'll make it to the beach this year or not but I sure would like to try my hand at shots like this!

Patrick, come visits the beaches in PR. I'll hook you up with the Pelicans. You can try for the really wild ones that are difficult to get close to or the semi-tame ones that you can reach out and pet.

Pelicans are some of my favorite birds and you've photographed them well.
