Default Beauty shots for magazine

Shot these for the Master's in Magazine, newspaper and online journalism capstone project this month. Untied Mag.

Same basic lighting for all of them, two-head Speedotron beauty dish centered above camera, flagged to create some depth and shadows. Black cards either side of the model to give the shadows a little bit more kick.

D300/80-200mm f/2.8 on all of them.

MNO_beauty-4
125mm, 1/200s, f/18 @ ISO200

MNO_beauty-3
110mm, 1/200s, f/16 @ ISO200

MNO_beauty-2
125mm, 1/200s, f/16 @ ISO200

MNO_beauty-1
100mm, 1/200s, f/16 @ ISO200

They were part of a spread about makeup and suchlike, so we wanted to focus on the face.

All I can say is "WOW"! I can keep staring at the 1st, that seems to be my favorite one. Simply awesome.

Very nice shots jamie, but why such a small aperature. Were you trying to kill some of the sharpness of the lens or something?

Eh? Smaller aperture = sharper, as a general rule. On the D300, you run into diffraction beyond f/16, but that's right about where I was shooting.

You can only dial back the power on a 1200 w/s pack and two-head dish so much, I'm pretty sure I shot these at A/B/C, -3.0 EV on the pack.

A wider aperture would've been clipping like crazy with all the white, and it's not like I needed to blow out the background with a large aperture. If I needed to balance a wider aperture, I would've ended up either diffusing the beauty dish, which ruins the effect, or moving it way back, which also ruins the effect.
