Default Second time I've tried my hand at portraits

UPDATE: more photos on the second page.

Last time I took shots of my sister, this time I took shots of a girl I used to work with. The hardest part was going up to her and saying, "So, uh, you mind if I take pictures of you sometime?" Never know how to start those conversations. Took the shots Wednesday evening, here are the first two I worked on. I'll have more but just thought I'd share.

I go tonite to do my third photo session with another friend (an ex actually) and we'll see how those go. I'm hoping after I'm done with her I'll feel confident enough to start advertising myself locally to do some senior portraits.

Thanks guys, I just finished these two last night, I'm sure I'll have a couple more to show soon.

Good shots, but you need to pay better attention to the background -- it detracts from the picture.

Yeah me too We took only about 4 shots with the sunglasses on cause she asked. But I gotta admit post is even easier when you don't have to worry about the eyes lol.

Thank you, I'll try to keep that in mind. Every time I have taken a portrait I've gone back to the computer and found something I should have looked for the first go around I think you may like some of the ones I'll post in a bit, they have much less busy backgrounds.

That's a great way of making a client feel vulnerable. It's happened to me before. I had such a happy person pose for me in a conceptual shoot and I hardly told them to do anything, because.. I just didn't think of anything..and their mood completely changed. They hardly wanted to smile and they lost track a lot.

I was reading on the DPS portrait tips that, if you have your client lean in more towards you, but kept the head leveled, it would give a nice perspective to the photo. It's all about reading, watching, learning, and eventually knowing.

I regretted ever booking a shoot without knowing proper poses for the location/client. Although, they were learning experiences and you do grow and learn from it.

I prefer the first photo, besides the annoying background.
