Default Cream Machine - what a pleasure

I recently rented the Nikon 85mm 1.4 lens and was very happy with the results. Now I'm actually thinking of buying it. Still debating the premium price of the 1.4 over 1.8.
(Thank you LoveDLSR for the suggestions and info)

I think its rightly called the 'cream-machine'. Here are a few quick pictures I took with them. Thanks for looking.

Great pictures...I think the third is stunning. Can't help you on the lens decision though

Since you already have a 50mm f/1.8 and the 85mm f/1.4 is a specialty (portrait) lens, you should only consider getting it if you plan to use it often.

Get the 85 f/1.8 if you like the focal length but don't mind not getting that 'Cream machine' looks. Otherwise you should consider a general purpose lens such as 80-200mm f/2.8 AF-D (or 70-300 VR).

Bokehlicious!!!!!!!!!

Gorgeous shots...and your daughters are just too darned cute! Wonderful series, thanks so much for sharing these.

I use my Canon 50mm f/1.8 and love it....the 85mm f/1.8 is on my wish list....and the Canon 50mm f1/.4.....as are many, many other lenses, LOL!

LoveDSLR, my primary lens is the 18-200mm(3.5 - 5.6), and yes like you said i do have the 50 1.8. The question I have in my mind is: If I shoot mainly at f2.0, will the level of creaminess differ in 1.8 and 1.4. It would be great to have the 1.4 but how much of a difference does it make to an amateur, who is more than likely taking pictures mainly of her fmaily at this point>

Thanks Susan. I'm thinking of ways to hook up my husband with yours, so he can get some IDEAS of what he can get me for our anniversary in 2 months.
Till I get my hands onto the 85mm I should probably pull out my nifty-fifty more often. All these days I had LensChangingPhobia. Now that I'm over it, I can dream of bigger better lenses now. And that could mean bigger holes in the pockets . Oh Well!.

You are at the crossroad between buying a lens you need (85 f/1.8) or a lens you want (85 f/1.4). It is not your amateur status but your budget that will determine which lens to own.

The 85 f/1.8 is a good 85 mm lens technically but it has none of the f/1.4 special quality for smooth portraits. The 85 f/1.4 'creaminess' are good at any apertures and you'll get a 3D look when use wide open.

85 f/1.8, 50 f/1.8 and 50 f/1.4 are good lenses for sharp and vivid photos, such as male portraits and young models in swimsuits or sportswear. Nikon portrait lenses such as 85 f/1.4, 105 f/2 DC and 135 f/2 DC are geared for traditional portraits.

If you're a professional then you buy lenses you need. However, you often buy lenses you want as a hobbyist. It is about time to show off your family photos using the 'Cream machine'.

All shots are quality pictures.
If I had to choose (difficult choice) I'd go for the forth. I think its composition is superb. It transcends the 2D. Thanks for sharing!
