Default Live Music with a Canon G10

I picked up a G10 last week as a pocket camera to shoot bands in local clubs & bars.

So far I am pretty happy with the results I am getting. Not as good as my 40D but still getting some very usable shots.

This one was blown out but I was able to save it with Topaz Adjust

The band is The Senders

Nice shots. I'm still experimenting with my G10. Not totally happy with it yet. I hope it gets better.

Yea they are actually really good. They have been playing around the Rhode Island area for almost 30 years and still draw a decent crowd.

The pictures just don't seem sharp to me. The focus seems a little off. And low light is very grainy. I don't know if it's me or the camera. I haven't really experimented too much yet but I'm disappointed for a $450 camera.

Really? Hmm I find it to be pretty sharp. especially at f5.6 or f8. I have been getting results that are close to if not better than my 40D with L glass. At f2.8 it's sharper than my dslr with any 2.8 lens I own.

Low light, High ISO, yea, there is a bit of noise.. That's the drawback of a tiny sensor camera. If you are comparing it to your 5D you will never be satisfied.

I try to keep it ISO 400 or lower and don't bother shooting over ISO 800 and also shoot 1/3-1/2 stop underexposed

Thanks. I'll give those settings a try. You shoot 1/3-1/2 stop underexposed?

Yea

I should say 1/3-2/3 on the G10 dial. It's not as crazy as it sounds. Esp if the subject is moving. For my live music shots it is the only way to go, as the stage lighting does a very good job of exposing the subject and underexposing overall keeps the background proper. It is kind of a poor mans way of expanding ISO without the noise. Try it next time. Take a couple shots a bit underexposed, you will be surprised how much you can do to make them great in post.
