That's a Beautiful Robber Fly Tom, Well composed and beautifully captured.
I was out last week and took this one, do you think it's a variety of the Robber? I didn't have my twin flash with me.

Very sharp! I have to agree, it is not a pretty creature, but the photographer did a great job capturing all the details. Nice work!

Never seen one quite like that, but it does look like some species of Robber Fly.
