Default waterfall?

Hard to find a waterfall of any size around here, especially if you can't hike at all, but here is a small one....from the park.

water

water

It took me long time to get a shot like this...I just wish I had a better waterfall to practice on....mmmmm, need to move back to South Africa.
Comments welcome as always,

You captured that well. Don't you just love playing with the exposure/shutter to get the water to look differently??

Thank you all....Teedlepeep...how fortunate for you that you live in an area with a lot more water available than here. I used to travel between NH and Maine all the time and always went through Bedford...what a beautiful place.

I personaly like the views of waterfalls as they naturally are. Without the "silky" feel to it. So in other words, I like the first one!

Great job leona. The second one looks great.

The only trick to taking waterfall pics, is to be there when it's almost dark out, so you can slow the shutter speeds down, without turning the aperature way up.

The only way to slow the shutter speed down when it's light out is to boost the aperature. Once you go higher than f/16, the picture quality will suffer. Most lenses will give there best quality pics between f/5.6 and f/11, so if you wait for just the right amount of light, you'll get your best shots.

Prime Time, do you think the picture suffered a lot? The settings were f/29 at 1/5 sec.
It was early in the am...around 8 or so, but very sunny here in Tucson...still the waterfall is in the shade.

Most lenses will start to drop off at f/16, so i would say you lost some picture quality if you used f/29. You will see it in the fine details. If you like the effect of 1/5s, set your camera up at f/11 and wait(in the evening) untill the light is low enough to give you 1/5s. Just take a sample shot and see what the shutter speed is. I like to use iso 100 and f/8 to f/11, because it gives me the best quality pictures i can get with my lens. As it starts getting darker, you can boost the iso a little and keep shooting. Then i veiw them on the computer and keep the one's i like best.

The way i like them is with just a touch of silkyness, but not overdone where it looks really fake. This is strictly personal taste of the photographer as to how much movement you want.

If you have a lens that was tested, you can see the results at www.slrgear.com
Just go to the make and model of lens you have and if it was tested you can see where it preforms best. Not only can you see which f/stops are best , you can see what portions of the zoom preform best. Very useful web site for choosing a good lens as well.
