Default My mate the Maori warrior

Continuing my education in photography, I had a crack at a portrait and some headshots today for the Strobist bootcamp assignment. I won't be submitting this for the assignment, but thought I'd share it here. This is my friend Boog. He's only wearing a half moko (facial tatoo) because he only knows his mother's whakapapa (genealogy). I decided to shoot him in front of a copy of the Treaty of Waitangi, NZ's founding document.

Half Boog

Thanks for looking

Thanks for sharing this excellent portrait elephunk and for the history lesson with the tatoo. Great work with the lighting too.

Jake.

This is an outstanding portrait. All aspects: the pose, the setting, the lighting and the intricate detail. There is a sense of pride that emanates from this photo. I've missed so many photos lately. I'm so thankful I didn't miss this one!

I like the overall photo, it's really well done and well considered. The background fits the subject perfectly and he was a great subject.

Kia Ora Man,

I'm flying into Auckland on Sunday and hope to get a chance to take some great photos in the few days I'll be there.
If I get some half as good as this one I'll be happy. Well done.

Cheers,

Woody

I cannot tell you how much I love this image. Years ago I saw a movie called Once Were Warriors. One of my all time favorites, very sad but yet very compelling and powerful movie.
Thank you for bringing back memories and sharing with us this truly inspiring image!

Thanks for the kind words all, here are a few more from the same shoot. With a guitar in his hand or a taiaha, Boog makes a great model. I hope these shots bring him some luck, because Boog really lives the blues.
