Default Pro focus

Taken about 120 minutes ago on Queens Wharf, Wellington, New Zealand. Obviously a professional with two cameras focusing on his hand with one. Pity the pole and the other person is in the background.

All Black sponsors Telecom were giving away free tickets to this weekends test match and
also a free trip to France in November to follow the All Blacks.

Professional - Focus
Exposure 1/200 at f2.8, 200mm, ISO 200

Set up as a rugby field with astro turf and goalposts.

Queens Wharf - Telecom rugby field
Exposure 1/2500 at f2.8, 70mm, ISO 200

All Black Ma'a Nonu with Joe Rokocoko in the background

Nice series .... I am a bad person because my first thought was GRAB THE CAMERAS !! but I have my court arguments ready .. I blame DPS for my camera envy !!

I love the All Blacks always admired them and they were my heroes when I played free tickets ???!!!! *wanders off muttering and grumbling about living in UK*

Pro photog is checking exposure-if his hand is in the same lighting as his subject,he takes a reading from his hand, and doubles the exposure ( the palm reads 36 % grey) I use a Canon baseball cap (Bright Red) as this reads as 18% grey-i just throw it down in the scene take a reading of it,and that's it. ( and I shoot Nikon!!!)

Okay- The basis for all metering systems is 18% grey-reflected light from your open palm is 36 % grey,so to get 18% grey from your reading, you need to double the shutter speed, or halve the aperture, say for instance, you get an exposure reading from your hand, and let's say it gives 1/250 sec at f8: you have a choice-keep aperture at F8 and double shutter speed to 1/500 sec; or keep shutter speed at 1/250 sec and set aperture to F11- clearer now? regards, ken

I forgot to add that 36% grey, being a darker tone than18% grey will require twice as much exposure as 18% grey.

Other things to consider-dry tarmacadam (roading ashphalt) and green grass are 18% grey.

thanks for this kencaleno - I wondered what he was up to when focusing on his hand - he took some time in doing it. Must try this myself now.

Cheers, Bernz
