Hi Angella - welcome to DPS! These look great. I particularly like number 2 in the sequence - the composition is really nice and you've captured the detail on the petals very well. Don't worry about going "fully automatic" with your camera - most of the challenge with this game is to get the composition right anyway. The D40 is great camera (my wife has one and loves it) and I'm sure you'll be playing with the other modes before you know it. Looking forward to seeing more of your work.
