Question Have you ever seen a heron do this??

I thought it was pretty interesting... I never saw one do it before, but this guy had an anhinga that he didn't appreciate sitting near him, so he kept fluffing himself up trying to scare it off.. I found it pretty humorous, and not typical of the usually graceful looking bird so I thought I'd share

The other is a red-shouldered hawk from the same day...

Were those shot with your sigma 70-200. If so, quite impressive. Well, impressive either way.

Thanks snowdust... If I remember correctly the heron was the 70-200 lens, but I believe the hawk was a 28-135mm with OS, but I don't recall if I had that on or not. And to be entirely fair I did some slight editing on the heron to blur out the background more than it was...

Wow, both of these are great and I mean really Great. You must have been very close to both of these guys.
To answer you question, yes I have seen this before. This is heron speak for go away. Saw a great egret and a little blue heron involved in a stare down over a fish the other day. They fluffed their feathers, stared at each other, after about five minutes of this the little blue launched an attack and the GH just flew away. Guess size doesn't me too much.

Was the hawk wild or in captivity? Both of these are really good. The hawk is really striking the pose there

Thanks FDCPR.. It's funny because this was a stare down too but I think more just because the GH didn't want the anhinga in his space... the anhinga wasn't bothering him. What's even funnier is they got in a pecking fight and the anhinga stood his ground and scared off the GH. I'll have to share that one with you...but yeah... size didn't matter this time either

Thanks pjflan. Both were actually in captivity. My photo group was granted access to the cages with some of the birds.. and the hawk was actually brought out for us with tethers on his legs..something else I have a shot of as well. I have some similar shots with bald eagles, although IMO not as good as the hawk shot.. I cropped the hawk a little bit for a better portrait (it was originally a horizontal vs vertical shot.) In case your curious this was at the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary.

Thanks PrimeTime... I'll admit the editing took a lot of time...especially around the feathers and leaves... I'm not very good with making selections in a situation like this so it took forever - glad it looks ok

Really nice work! I've never seen a heron get all territorial like that - so, thanks for posting.
