Hi everyone! As most of the regulars know ~ I am leaving for a 10 day trip to Disney in a couple of weeks. I have been working on a few techniques for some of the special photos I am planning on taking. One of the photos I really want to try is getting a photo of my kids on dark rides... peter pan, pirates... those type. No flash is allowed but I wouldn't want it anyway ~ I want and effect of the lit up attraction area to show up and I get a silhouette of my kids looking at it. I have seen some BEAUTIFUL dark ride photos so I want to at least try.
Here is what I came up with last night to give you an idea of the look I want ![]() I did lighten his face a tiny bit and there is a lot of blue ~ on the ride the reflected color will vary with the attraction... but do you think this would work on a dark ride that has well lit anamatronics? I have a p&S so am limited with what I can do. The EXIF was: Camera: Canon PowerShot G10 Exposure: 0.033 sec (1/30) Aperture: f/3.2 Focal Length: 8.1 mm ISO Speed: 200 Exposure Bias: +2 EV Flash: Off

Check out this: http://disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2187925
This is the Disboards - everything Disney. This is from the photography section. This is the thread for night shots taken at Disney. Also, if you search the board, there are other threads on shots that were taken on Peter Pan, Haunted Mansion, and Pirates of the Carribean. Hope this helps. |

Yup I belong to the DIS and have for a few years. I am actually good friends with the lady who started that thread LOL she makes all of my daughter's Disney dresses
![]() The problem comes in that there aren't any photos of kids riding the dark rides. I don't want just the ride and I dont want just the kid ~ I want to try and combine both. I know it will need some PP work to lighten the kids' faces but with all of the black background I think it would be easy to lighten... I can just isolate their face and lighten it. The photo up above was just an example of what I was looking to do.

That is pretty much perfect Brook. I know what you are trying to do. I have done the Disney Parks in Florida twice and know the rides that you are talking about. I will be looking forward to seeing the ones from Disney. You are going to be very busy. Great work with the light on this one.
Jake.

My issue comes in with how far the attraction will be from my kids' face. It will be further away than the screen was on hubby BUT the light will be brighter as well on the ride. I won't have a lot of time to practice and I am not sure how to re create the lighting here at home so I can practice! I don't think they will let us ride the same ride 3-4 times until I get it right hahahahah

That is the light and the effect I want but the ride is a lot different and I am not sure how to reproduce the same effect on the ride. They are slow moving rides so the shutter speed should be high enough ..though I might want a tad higher... the biggest issue is the lighted attraction will be further away from their face than the screen is to hubby. I am still going to attempt it. The black areas are helpful for PP as I can isolate either one of the 2 subjects and lighten as needed... at least I hope I can LOL
I dont have a fancy DSLR so I have to work with what I do have...and get creative LOL I have searched all of the EXIF files on flckr in the dark ride group...most of them have the ISO soooo high kicked up my p&s would look horrid with all of the grain ..even with a denoise program. So I am going in a different way in hopes of getting the shot right... I am going to try and keep the ISO at 200 and adjust the speed and AV a bit and go with a +2 on my EV to help. To give you an idea of some of the photos that did a GOOD job of dark rides they used ABOUT the following: EX: 1/30 AV: f/1.4 ISO: 4500 no flash Now my camera only goes to f/2.8 and there is no way my camera can pull off a decent shot at 4500 ISO even using the de noise programs. Its a great p&S but its a p&S and not DSLR.
