Default USS Salt Lake City

At the Memorial Day service I attended Monday. One of the sailors that was aboard the USS Salt Lake City, CA-25 (Cruiser), was in attendance that day. This gentleman, built by hand,
a model of the USS Salt Lake City. Here are a few images of that model.

A true labor of love. I wish I could recall the old salt's name that built this model.
I will work on finding out.

Fair winds shipmate.

Thanks to you both. I'm afraid these gallant men and women are passing now at a rate
last seen in the war they fought in their youth. If you know a few, spend some time with them.

Great shot, if you had taken it with water in the background I might not have known it was a model!

Thanks! The guy that built the model is a real hoot to talk too. The called the Salt Lake City the "One Ship Fleet." The Japanese declared her sunk several times, and she even survived two atomic bomb tests. She was finally sunk in war games in or about 1947. What a ship!

USS Salt Lake City, what a labour of love, so beautifully and painstakingly planned, crafted and constructed. Tom, sorry for leaving feedback on the boat rather your excellent pictures but that is some piece of work, and good that its used and seen and celebrated rather than hidden in a case all the time.

Not a problem Beach. I concur with you observations one hundred present. This ship was one of the few "heavies" left in the Pacific fleet to answer her nations call during the dark days, right after the attack on Pearl Harbor. She was actually out to sea with the USS Enterprise. They were on their way back from a fighter and supply delivery to Wake Island. From that point on, the Salt Lake City was in run and gun mode for quite some time. Sorry to drone on, but she had some history!
