Default Nikki sue Nikon goes to town (Winder, GA) Part II

Okay, so a month ago, I posted Nikki Sue Nikon goes to town and I was going to follow up shortly with part II. Oh well time flies!

You may recall from my last post that Winder was originally a settlement called Snodon inhabited by Creek Indians. Around 1793, the area started being inhabited by settlers and the town was known as Jug and then Jug Tavern and finally Winder.

About a mile from the train depot, is Fort Yargo State Park. Fort Yargo was built in 1793 to protect the settlers and still stands today:

Ft Yargo

The town of Jug Tavern originally extended a half mile from the intersection of the railroad tracks and Broad Street. This was at the intersection of three counties, Gwinnett, Jackson, and Walton. The train depot, built in 1892, was located near this spot. Many trains have passed by in the past 200 years:

Being located at the intersection of three counties caused tremendous jurisdictional problems. One day, two men got into an argument. The first man, standing in Gwinnett County, shot the second man standing in Jackson County. The victim fell and died in Walton County. Because of situations like this, Barrow County, with Winder as the County Seat, was carved out of Gwinnett, Jackson and Walton Counties in 1914. It was named after a chancellor of the University of Georgia. The courthouse was built in 1920:

Behind the courthouse is the old jail, built in 1915. It now houses the Barrow County History Museum. It is open to the public and one can tour the old jail cells and see the hanging tower.

Hope you enjoyed the tour!

Excellent story and excellent shots...am curious as to how far you are from Atlanta. My brother lives there and we come through from time to time. From my time being raised on Lookout Mtn in Chattanooga, those county license plates are familiar and have been in and around the Chattanooga area, so I suspect it is not too far from there. If I weren't so lazy, I'd just mapquest it......but sadly, I really am too lazy!

Dang. I wish there was a story like yours for the four corners area Arizona, NM, Utah and Colorado. You could have had murder and mayhem in 3 states. I bet you can't guess but did you know I love stories? You did a really good job matching your photos to your story.
