Default macro shots (some sort of mite/spider/alien)

Well ive been experimenting with my lenses and macro shots - here are a couple I took today, they're not as sharp as I would have liked thou.

70 + 50mm

210 + 50mm

Here's a shot of the setup I used, anyone know how to work out the magnification ratios? Its a 70-210mm (set at 70 in the first shot and 210 in the second) on the body with a 50mm reversed on the front.

Anyway, hope you like them...

Cool pic. I've always known those things as "Paper Spiders". They seem to live in/around dead wood (and apparently, paper).

Default Paper Spider

I really enjoyed the first photo. The magnification is superb.

Photograph a ruler. That lets you easily measure how much area you are capturing. Now compare that to the size of your sensor and you can figure out the magnification level.

My Nikon D40 has a 23.7 x 15.5mm sensor (taken from figures at http://www.dpreview.com/). If I photograph a ruler with mm marks and can see 23 of them across the image, I am at about 1:1 ("true macro"). If I have got about 45 visible, then 1mm on the sensor represents about 2mm of real distance and I am at 1:2, which is still quite respectable - many "macro" lenses" only let you get this close.

You will find that this varies with the amount you zoom... and that, the closer you get, the more frustratingly tiny the depth of field is!
