These are but a few images that my husband took while my son and I had taken refuge at my parents' house. We were without power from Friday afternoon (May 8) around 1pm until Monday (May 11) evening around 8pm; and were one of the first to get it back. Many were without power through the week. We were fortunate enough not to have sustained significant damage to our home, but so many have lost their homes and vehicles to this unbelievable natural disaster.
Straight line wind gusts reported through five counties, up to 106 mph. It was insane! I've never seen so many trees uprooted and utility poles snapped in half. Cleanup is still underway. ![]() Poles were leaning, snapped, or hanging from lines down many of the major streets. ![]() This has been common scenery of late: trees larger than this completed uprooted by wind. Vehicles and homes smashed beneath the broken lumber. ![]() Trees 100 years old plus have lost their life as a result of this occurrence. Broken like a twig. ![]() After the hurricane was over, this was the look of nearly every street. Trees, limbs, branches, utility poles and power lines down everywhere. People were driving in circles in search of a path home. More images available here. Thanks for looking.

Aimee, What a nightmare. The losses are hard to imagine. It must just break your heart to see so beloved trees uprooted or snapped like the one in your photo above. We care about what effects one another here at DPS and while I am sad you had to gone through this ordeal, I'm glad you shared it with us so we can know. My thoughts are with you and community as you seek to recover.

Oh goodness gracious - Nature sure had a way to tell us how strong she can be. We've had flooding here this week, and 1/3 of our annual rainfall in 24 hours, so I can be sympathetic.
So glad that you and yours are all safe. Trees will eventually grow back, and cars replaced/houses rebuilt, but people... So glad no children were in that playground. Good luck! Jane

You're right, Mother Nature definitely showed us another side of her that day. Despite the destruction, I believe there was only one fatality as a result of the storm, and some injuries following it by those trying to clean up the aftermath. So all in all, we were blessed to come out as we did. Thank you so much for your comments.

Sandee, so sorry for the bad weather, I can't imagine what this is like, we came close to this in 1987, I think, but in my area nowhere near as bad. I am glad you and your family where not too bad off. Your captures of this terribe weather really hit home the devastation effect that the weather can have. I am glad that you and yours were all ok..
Jake.

I am so sorry this happened.
I am in New Orleans so have been through a *few* hurricanes. I know how it feels to see your neighborhood torn to shreds ... its one thing to see it happen to someone else but once it happens to you.... WOW the impact is everlasting.
