Default Sometimes nature provides opportunity...

.. that is too hard to pass up. The stellar jay is a beautiful, rather large bird that despite its size, is rather timid. They are cheeky though and will sit in the trees and call if their favorite feeder is empty! Make the tiniest of movement or noise and they are gone before you can blink. Today I came home to find two of them scrounging around under the trees looking for that perfect twig. Obviously nest building (or repairing after the wind storm we had), they flew off when I walked to my front door. Regardless I ran upstairs, grabbed my camera and sat down on my deck to wait and watch. Within minutes they were back. Overcast skies meant low light and no sunshine to truly show off their stunning blue feathers. Still, an opportunity not to be passed up, a stellar jay with a mouthfull of twigs!

Oh, Barb, what a magnificent bird! I've never seen one! We have blue jays here, and as pretty as they are, they're not nearly as stunning as this creature. What a fantastic SHOT (had to get you back LOL). Thanks so much for sharing this. I'm going to look this bird up in my bird reference book!

Hi Barb! This is a very nice capture...don't believe that I have ever seen a picture of a bird with twigs in its beak before...I have seen a little straw etc......also noticed you are up on a big moment with your 2000th post just a single post away. Let me be the first to congratulate you!

Beautiful Stellar's Jay. Nice saturation on the feathers. Love it.

Did you find him? These birds are quite comica, even a tiny little sparrow can send them packing! The blue on these Jay's takes the cake, it is really pretty in the sunshine. Gotta get used to taking SHOTS at err umm of birds.

Patrick thank you so much, I am letting this one slip by as so many people are reaching milestones this week. This beauty was watching me all the time but I think the twigs were taking priority, his mate flew off! It was comical to watch him as he had a full beak and still continued to attempt to pick up more. Like us I guess he was after that perfect one!

Thank you so much Sheriliz, glad you liked him. I have a few on the feeder but natural, in the garden is far better I think.

Thank you Fred, I was in two minds about the lack of light. No sunshine meant no highlights blown and more detail revealed yet it also meant the blue lacked lustre.
