Default Nikki Sue Nikon goes to town (Winder, GA)

Last weekend Nikki Sue Nikon said she wanted to do something different. Since she knows I love small towns, she suggested we go to one of the many small towns near us for a photo shoot. We decided to start in Winder (the i is long, so it's pronounced like wind up the clock).

The Winder area was occupied by creek indians and was known as Snodon. When white settlers started inhabiting the area in 1793, it was known as Jug and then ten years later as Jug Tavern. Just down from the depot is Fort Yargo State Park You've seen some posts from me of pictures I've made while at lunch at the park. The original fort, built in 1793 is still standing inside the park.

Duck Head apparel operated a plant in Winder, so if you bought Duck Head clothes anytime previous to the last 15 years, there's a chance they were made in Winder.

Our first picture is the old train depot, built in 1892

Here's a picture of Nikki Sue and Mike across from the courthouse, which was built in 1920.

Nikki Sue likes the circus, but she's having a hard time deciding whether to go to the one at the National Guard Armory, or the one that takes place in the background at the courthouse.

Of course, no photo shoot in a small southern town is complete without showing off one of our typical Victorian era houses! This one was built in 1902 and is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Nikki Sue and I hope you've enjoyed these glimpses of a small town. We hope to show you more of Winder and other nearby towns soon.

Very cool Mike. I love the train station and how you framed the house with the brick wall & ivy. Very nice. Thanks for taking me to a small town.

Love the narrative that you put with these shots ! What a great series of pics, very well done. The circus sounds like so dang much fun ... I think you should go to both lol

Thanks. My attempt to reveal some of me without showing what an old fart I really am.

I love the train station, too. It's also on the National Register of Historic places. I'm thinking about shooting a series of them along this track.

When I saw the Ivy running up the wall in front of the house......well, I just had to do it. It's also for sale. What I could see of the interior through the windows was just incredible.

I've been surprised at how much history I've been finding around here lately.

Those tracks get a lot of use. I kept a close eye behind me. You never know what's coming!

It was a great day, bright and sunny, high in the low 80s. Life is good!

Thank you. So many at DPS have taken me to so many places that I thought I needed to return the favor.

I'd have to take vacation time to go to the Barrow County Courthouse circus, so that one is out. However, it might be great fun to go see Tatanka, the circus world's only performing buffalo at the National Guard Armory. It just doesn't get any more small town than that!!
