Default Cottonmouth Moccasin! (Poisonous Snake)

One of the more common poisonous snakes of the Deep South. This one was behind glass, however. Don't want to get too close!

Hi Gary
That's a nice shot - particularly since it was taken through glass. It looks quite a strong biter so I too would stay well away. Well done

Really nice shot.

They are too common around here. Moccasin's are the only snake I'll kill. I've got a old bolt action .22 loaded with shot shells just for them.

I have multitudes of snakes in my area, any other snake I shoot with a camera.

Thanks everyone. I've never actually seen one of these in the wild. They live in lower S.C., but I'm in the uppermost corner. We have a lot of nonpoisonous water snakes around here. I keep hoping to get a shot of one, but haven't yet. When I was a kid my grandmother lived in an area where these were common, so we were always told to watch out for them. I've heard they're pretty agressive.

Their just like any animal, some are highly aggressive, and will bite for no reason, and some wont. A few years back I was walking thru some woods to a lake with my Dad. I stopped, and looked down, and one was coiled and ready for action less than a foot from my leg. I was able to get out of the way before it struck, but if it wanted to it could have got either of us.

A friend of the family was sitting on a dock with her legs hanging over, and one hit her for no reason.

Their cousins the Copperhead are pretty much the same way.
