Lightbulb First Flash Fotography Foray

Heres my first flash fotography foray
Using only the off camera SB600 I experimented with some stuff I’ve been wanting to try for a long long time.
All manual mode using the 18-135mm lens

It started out with a white backdrop but the black worked so much better.. this was in the mid afternoon in a fairly bright kitchen.

Dinr in evening with the lights on… 

I’d beed saving this tomato for this shot for days, unfortunately I left it too long and I dropped it so many times it split open.. then I had to stop.

dude, NICE! We are kind of in the same boat; i just got my SB-600 yesterday. but i am still waiting on the cord to do some off-camera stuff like this.

The second one is just awesome. I love how the background compliments the green of the plant. these are all just really well done!

Very nice! Water is something I haven't played with using the off camera stuff, but that's looking good!

thanks Anthony.. its great fun. its a great way to waste (spend?) time.

cheers Nicole!, keep a lens cloth ready.. theres lots of splashback
i used a black serving plate with about 1cm of water in it.
i'll work on my "people" shots and hopefully have a good result soon. (been using my own diffuser/reflector) and its starting to look quite good.

haha, poor tomato. Groceries should know better: "Don't be near a experimental photographer!"

It's a joy to see you starting to shoot off-camera flash photos. It's like a whole new world has appeared, right?

The plant shot is m favorite too. The nice greens and the texture fit well together, because of the light direction. Well done!

I love your shots! The second one is my favorite.

Since I'm still learning I have one question for you, what do you mean when you talk about off camera flash photos?

heres an example of off camera flash.
iit only flashes when you hit the shutter release. way better than a torch
http://www.photosphere.us/Galleries/..._SB-600_lg.jpg

basically instead of the built in flash going off (which gives disgusting shadows behind the subject because the light is parallel with the lens)

for off camera work the "speedlight" which can fit on top of the camera on the hot-shoe, is then triggered by the camera acting as a commander.
some cameras have a built in commander that allows wireless flash (like mine), others you have to plug a cable between the camera and the flash.

Oh!! That sounds cool! I hate using my flash so usually I only take pictures outside in the natural lighting. I will have to see if my camera will be able to do this.

it is pretty cool you can "gel" the light to change its colour and shoot through a diffuser to soften the light.. the possibilities are endless.. i'm only in week 1 of my Flash photography and wow.. its really mind bending.

what sort of camera have you got?
