Thumbs up

Gorgoues(sp? sorry I'm a horrible speller) I've been lucky enough to see The Northern Lights once but they were not colored just white. A few years ago there was a brilliant display over much of the US in wonderful colors but I unforunitly missed it. I hope to see them in color some day and if I do I hope I have my camera with me.

You sure are lucky to see these. A very nice picture with nice colours. I loved the inclusion of the tree as well

Very Nice, I've been watching our nightsky for my opportunity. Your picture makes me anxious.

Zetson, Seeing the aurora borealis in on my bucket list. Your photo just increases that desire. Just awe inspiring and "something special".

Wow, thank you everybody for those wonderful comments! I must admit that before I got interested in photography, I couldn't understand the hype This is a pretty regular phenomenon up here (click for map). But I was stunned when I looked at the LCD screen after I shot this picture. I guess the trick is to put these amazing lights in a context, like adding the tree in the picture, which was completely accidental, LOL. I didn't have any time to compose the picture since the lights were about to disappear.

I exposed the picture for 30 seconds, which I believe is too long. If you view this picture in full size, the movement of stars and branches is visible, and since the lights were moving rapidly, I didn't catch the different shapes that the light created. All you see in this picture is one big mass of green light. So stay tuned! These lights shall not escape my CMOS sensor this winter, LOL.

PS: I lived two years in Grand Forks, North Daktoa, and one time I observed these lights quite clear. Is that normal? I thought that was too far south.
